UNDER PRESSURE

After the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Swindon last weekend, the Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott came under intense criticism from the fans. However, he was able to restore some pride after the recent 1-0 win over promotion chasing Coventry City. The manager has said that the criticism, and the intensity of it, has certainly hurt him in recent weeks. Hence, it was extremely pleasurable to have won such an important match in a convincing manner. Carlisle United have been flirting with relegation throughout the season, but two victories during the Christmas period helped improve the mood at the club.

However, they have once again fallen behind when it came to form during the month of January. The club hit a low point after the 4-0 defeat against Swindon. This was followed by a barrage of criticism for the manager, who has now masterminded a 1-0 victory over Coventry. Greg Abbott has called for the players to be mentally tough in this situation. He has also seen a lot of good attitude from the players in the training ground, and the win over Coventry was a result of it. Abbott has said that the key thing now is to produce the same kind of performance every week.

“The criticism, at the levels it comes, really hurts. We have to be mentally tough. I have to take a bit of pleasure when we beat a side like Coventry after the back of last week. We were really pleased with the work on the training ground and I think it spilt over today. Whatever the result was, we got an improved attitude and the players have definitely run harder than last week. That is something we have got to try to bottle and make sure it happens every week,” said Abbott.
