Carlisle United coach Keith Curle reflects on his two years in charge of the club in a recent interview.

The 2005 floods is one that cannot be forgotten in the club’s history. The club framed an aerial picture of the old stadium grounds being covered with dirty water. The picture is obvious as visitors move through the glass doors at the stadium.

“It’s two years now, but it doesn’t even seem like a week since I walked into the building and got met with picture of the flood. That is something else that is changing,” Curle said.

“It’s not going to be the welcome now in the football club. Yes, it’s a talking point inside the corridors, but we don’t want it in reception. There’s more to this football club than devastation,” Curle added disapproving of the picture. Curle joined United in the summer of 2014, and he has helped the side since joining.

After the flood, Carlisle were relegated from the League One, then they dropped further as they struggled to win games in the League Two. When Curle is asked to sum up his stay at the club so far, he opined that the club is in need of fumigation. The avoidance of defeats in the current season seems to reflect progress, and Curle seems happy with the new spirit in the city.

Carlisle United came close to causing an upset in the second round of the EFL cup, as his team lost to Derby County only on penalties.

The penalty shootout was lengthy by any standards and the Championship outfit only edged it with a 14-13 win. The shootout was also highly controversial since the referee allowed Derby County’s Bradley Johnson to take a penalty despite the player having completed his role in the game. Darren Bent scored the opening goal for Derby in the second half and it looked like they were heading for a comfortable victory before Mike Jones came up with a very late equaliser for the away team.

This took the game into extra time where the two teams struggled to make much of a difference. As penalty shootouts were the norm to decide games that were still remains even after 120 minutes of action, fans prepared for a potential quick shootout as is the norm in most circumstances. However, fans were in for a shock when both teams carried on without facing any penalties. When the full complement of 11 players had been used, the game was still undecided. Derby, though, did not elect to use Johnson for any of the penalties and Keith Curle claimed that he was disappointed with the decision of the referee to allow this to happen.

Mark Gillespie was in action against Liverpool in the past term and even starred in the League Cup at Anfield but is now ready to face life in the League Two division.

The last season was one that fans and players of Carlisle United would not forget in a hurry as there were a lot of highs and lows.

For Gillespie, it was one memorable moment as he was the hero in October when they faced Liverpool in a penalty shootout in the League Cup. Gillespie was awarded the Man of the Match as he was impressive throughout regular time and saved the kicks of Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana, even with the pressure of playing at Anfield.

One of the lows was when he had to be rescued from the first floor window of his house when the floods hit Carlisle. He eventually joined a few other players that volunteered to repair the damage the water did. The club also finished on a disappointing note when they finished tenth in the League Two, flooring hopes of a possible promotion to the League One. Despite not making it to the upper echelon of clubs, Gillespie remained a standout player with his reflexes, agility and distribution prowess.
